Zimbabwe detects its first omicron case

Zimbabwe has detected case of Omicron variant Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care  revealed yesterday.

“We are now in a particularly dangerous period once again, where the fourth wave is slowly visiting us with the identification of the B.1.1.529 or the Omicron variant of COVID-19,” Chiwenga said.

Chiwenga did not give details of how many cases of Omicron infections had been recorded in the country.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday gazetted rules imposing quarantine on all travelers entering the country, including returning residents.

Hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans who work and live in neighboring South Africa, which was first to disclose detection of the new variant on Nov. 25 are expected to travel home over Christmas.
